A Legacy of Ill-Standing (Part Three) - "They Were His Own Words...."
It is without a doubt the last couple of years of my life have been filled with adventure and excitement. If you would have told me years ago as a child watching the film Bloodsport that I would be covering a story that led directly to Frank Dux himself I would have told you that you were insane. There was no way that would have ever have been my life. And yet here I am doing exactly that and finding still more people who deserve the same attention and hard scrutiny as he does. While everything Frank says or tells is without a doubt a lie to cover more lies, the same can be said about those others who I am currently covering. I would argue that the stories that they have blended together, restructured and laid back into the public view over the years are just as convoluted as anything which people like Frank Dux and Jack “Papasan” Stern created. We should all be so lucky to have kids who were gold medalists in the “1987 Olympics.” Yes, he said that many times and I’m sure it became so commonplace to say it that after a time even he believed it. Worse was his claim of winning a Medal of Honor which coincidentally he built his entire life around.
So it seems for the likes of these people that the lie becomes reality. It is their lives and remains their claim to some kind of fame and glory they themselves never worked for. Eventually they tell so many of these lies that they can’t remember which ones are out there anymore. And the internet, like the sea, is a meticulous and scorned woman. She has quite a long memory and what gets said online remains online forever.
And so the last many months have been spent looking through each detail and comparing it to previous postings by the dynamic duo of Bret Gordon and his teacher Steven Hatfield. The changes are sometimes subtle, sometimes massive. Some of the ways he tries to explain away the obvious are without a doubt the most hilarious explanations I have ever been privy to see. Why lie when the truth is so much simpler? Well it’s simple. Gordon cannot afford to let the truth be known. He has built his whole life on these claims now. And his teacher and business partner, as well as others, well they depend on Gordon to spin that narrative. He is like the proverbial glue holding a lot of this together and even his own sensei stated that Gordon speaks for him. I assume his attorney informed him to tell everyone that as well. And Gordon? Well I have to admit that good press secretaries are hard to find.
It is with that I have looked into an obscure claim Gordon and his teacher have made regarding a system called Hankido. Yes, it seems this is yet another William Sirbaugh link which holds as much water as a bottomless boat. And you know I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t have the proof, right? Oh, I know Gordon will accuse me of telling “half-truths” and pushing conspiracies and whatnot. But with his lawsuit that’s underwater…I mean underway…I don’t think the general public nor a court would appreciate him suing people for calling him a fraud when he indeed is proven to be lying about a substantial amount of his background. That’s actually called fraud if you think about it.
And so with that I ask again for Gordon to provide evidence that contradicts me. He has yet to do this….ever….and with many of his numerous websites down he really has no way to do this except by social media (he has blocked me), perhaps YouTube (except he has turned off all comments) perhaps an email or, dare I say a phone call? Yes I’m sure that lawsuit is going to look pretty dang good with a call to yours truly. I even invite his legal team along should he require it. No sense in them being denied the opportunity to challenge my findings, too. I mean they entrusted Adam McKinley and Jon Duvall to bring me to my knees and that worked out so well, didn’t it? I guess when it comes right down to it Gordon should remember....

The Claims as They Were
It seems dead men tell no tales and William Sibaugh has been much the same. Having passed in 2009 it has been a consistent ordeal for Gordon and Hatfield to attempt to link this man to the many claims they’ve made in addition to linking their “Real Deal Judo” to the United States Traditional Kodokan Judo headed by a man named Bruce Bethers. Oh and then of course how could we forget thrice-banned-from-Judo organizations Jack Stern? Yes indeed, when it comes to lineages Gordon sure knows how to pick them. Don’t count him out because if it can be connected like Duplos to Legos this man will valiantly make the connection.
For example:
1) Judo - Jack Stern – no record exists at the Kodokan of him having ever trained there while in his own statements in court he admitted to never having been to Japan either. So of course the photo with Mifune-sensei Gordon once paraded about had to have Stern in it to make the case that he was indeed there at some point…so just circle someone that it turns out most likely is Judoka Hal Sharp who did train with Mifune-sensei in real life. In the time since he began this garbled mess of a claim he and his teacher have founded their own Judo organization as well as flaunted the street-life of Judo and it’s techniques through the USTKJ, an organization that by it’s founder’s own words has no connection to the Kodokan.

2) William Sirbaugh – Jidokwan – while this one has been nitpicked to death in many ways everyone should know his website dedicated to teaching both this and Tang Soo Do was recently taken down due to copyright violations and using information and pictures he pilfered away from the real guys and gals in Ohio….guys and gals he desperately wanted to make sure he had a lineage to at one time until questions became unbearable (don’t they always?) and he then claimed they were all just haters and liars themselves. I personally believe as does the Ohio folks that his proud link to Korea rests on this story of Sirbaugh and him creating the AJA, passing it to Hatfield and then running around ranking people way above par. Gordon himself at the wizened age of thirty has a master’s rank in this system while many Jidokwan folks I’ve personally spoken to (outside of Ohio) have stated between laughter at his videos state based on age alone he nor Hatfield should be the ranks they are. One man I spoke to in Georgia stated, I quote, “the wonders one finds with lineage, simply being there is enough to grant skill beyond measure I suppose?” Still to this moment no response has come from Gordon’s side of the fence as to why his site was down. But then again the one place he had to offer a rebuttal was either removed by him (as those near him claim he has stated) or was taken down for the same reason as the AJA website (the very thing I suspect.)

3) William Sirbaugh – American Yoshinkan Aikijujutsu – the crown jewel of Gordon’s claims and one of the two ways he claims to be a headmaster (the other being his own homebrew style of San Budo Bugei/Bret-Fu.) As you can see Sirbaugh makes another appearance in this vast shared cinematic universe as the one person who linked Hatfield to the infamous and mysterious “Hasaka Yutashi.” Gordon’s claims are that the man changed his name for…well, whatever reasons he did…and then vanished into the ether while at the same time bringing the real-deal of aiki arts to the world stage. The only evidence that exists of the man is a photo from an anniversary gathering plastered on Gordon’s page stating Yutashi was there, and a satirical article I love to bring up often showing the man’s tendency to be a Nazi sympathizer and sexually-driven madman with a sticky end. We will come back to this at a later date because….it's funny and could be very important.

4) William Sirbaugh – Hankido and his off-shoot called Combat Hanki – ladies and gentlemen we have with us again in this article William “Wild Bill” Sirbaugh as he is paraded about once more as a founder this time of “Combat Hanki,” allegedly developed from his vast training in Hankido while in Korea. Ah,yes, and here is the meat and potatoes of this article. Shall we?

Hankido and Sirbaugh – Another Made-Up Connection
First off, what is Hankido?
Hankido is a Korean Martial Art founded by Myung Jae-nam and is his own expression of the Korean Art of Hapkido. A small and very close community of practitioners make up this system worldwide and quality control is of the essence. Funny enough, both Gordon and Hatfield have attempted to make connections to this art as well. I know, a surprise, huh?
One needs only visit the archives of his old AJA page. It doesn't exist anymore except in that form because Gordon decided to steal and use pictures that were not related to him, his sensei or his own organization. This was covered in my previous article linked above.
The claim is simple: Gordon and Hatfield both state and claim numerous times across Gordon's pages that Sirbaugh trained in Hankido and through that created a system called "Combat Hanki." This page screencapped above actually states Gordon combined the systems into his home-brew American Yoshinkan Aikijujutsu system and thereby connected them. The glue that they need to hold the story together? Sirbaugh.
I think the time for being nice about this is over, so if he’s not a fraud then why does everything he puts out as part of his “esteemed lineages” fall apart faster than a newspaper in a tornado? Because he reaches into these styles, finds a loose end he can exploit and connect himself and his teacher to them through stretches of the imagination and Hankido was no exception. Gordon has for years hidden behind the veneer of being some legendary instructor with lineages galore. Stern. Sirbaugh. Jidokwan. These have all failed when placed under scrutiny.
He has hidden behind this self-created image long enough. Gordon is too narcissistic to actually admit he was wrong or God forbid he concocted this entire charade revolving around his sensei's step-daddy. And since he won’t be honest with people who visit his sites I will simply do as I always do and do it for him. To cover my bases across the board I sent out an inquiry and asked some questions that predated the founding of Hankido itself....just to be sure.
And surprise, surprise, I got the answer I already knew would be coming.
Oh and that isn't all. As it turns out Gordon himself reached out to this gentleman some years back and asked some questions.
Oh! And screenshots of the messages Gordon and he exchanged? What on Earth could they contain? Let's read them.
We exchanged a few more emails where I provided him proof of Gordon's own words and statements claiming a link to Hankido. Klaas came up with his own theory on it that I think may actually hold merit.
I followed these emails up with an inquiry to a person Klaas told me to contact. I have by their wishes redacted their emails as I did for Klaas.
And to no surprise there is not a record of Sirbaugh here either. Just like the Moodukkwan and Jidokwan the link they have attempted to create for William Sirbaugh being any kind of martial arts master in these arts or Hankido fall over as easily as a cardboard box in the rain. At this point a wet shart has more potency than any claim of legitimacy to Wild Bill ever having been a part of these systems. It would usually be sometime around now when Gordon reads this that he would race to his pages to erase the links he made up, but well...
I want to add here for further reading go check out this article summing up Mr. Sirbaugh and look closely at Claim #8, I will assume at this point Lordus Sapiens can go ahead and check this one off as debunked as well.
Oh and lest I forget...what about Sirbaugh's own homebrew system of "Combat Hanki?" Well if he had no connection or training in Hankido I'd say that it also does not exist...at least in regards to him.
The Last Sirbaugh Connection - Hasaka Yutashi's Real Identity
With every single claim laid bare regarding Wild Bill there remains one more left: American Yoshinkan Aikijujutsu. Funny enough it also requires the presence of Sirbaugh and Hasaka Yutashi being friends and training partners to be hold water bit in a hilarious twist there is a bit of a problem even with that one. You see Gordon, as he is prone to do, never researched what he actually made public to everyone. According to someone inside the Koryu community with a vested interest in Daito Ryu and it's history there exists a location where Gordon took a certain picture and has attempted to say it contains photographic evidence of Hasaka Yutashi pre-name change. And my, oh my which one could it be? He has according to this source taken a hold of many which have not only an original source location but also evidence to back that it is NOT what is being claimed by that Kaiso of Kaiso's.
It seems there is one last piece to break open and reveal the last of the truth of Bret Gordon and his claims of grandmaster-hood. Oh, I'm sure he will get his sensei's friends to vouch they met Hasaka Yutashi at some point. And why not? Like Gordon and Hatfield many of them rely on these men to provide a security net to their standing in several arts to include Judo, Gracie Jiu Jitsu and Jidokwan. And hey, more power to them. But Gordon filed a frivolous lawsuit claiming to not be a liar or a fraud and yet at almost every turn his own words are bringing him under the microscope harder and harder by the day.
Gordon has even gone as far as adding his "lineage" to the official Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu Wikipedia article. Of course I was alerted by readers and using what Gordon himself added I updated it and now it reads a bit more honest.
And so with that I depart for now. But I leave knowing quite a bit more than I think dear sokey-dokey Gordon wants me to know. And the thing is at this point I want to ask: how, with all the information I was able to gather in mere days has he made the leaps to the conclusions he did?
The Hankido folks were more than happy to let me know his claims of Sirbaugh, Hatfield or himself were not valid and no record exists. Well he has done this before. He used an email from the Kodokan stating there was no record of Jack Stern with them and circled what appears to be Hal Sharp with Mifune-sensei claiming that it was Stern, above reproach, without doubt....
So why would we expect this to be any different? Gordon has no lineages as he claims. Hasaka Yutashi is, and I can say this comfortably, a myth that exists only with Gordon and HK Hayward, and at this point I am more inclined to believe Hayward's take on the man despite it being satire. It does sound a bit more believable. I suppose we will see....and for now I am content to sit and wait, watching patiently. You never know when I may just choose to come forward with what it is I have, that final card in my hand.
Poker really is not Gordon's game.

The martial arts industry in America is a crab cage composed of a bunch of vigilantes and gossip mongers - led by organized criminals and their associates. One calling himself the Godfather in the Mafia sense of the word. Where people pander to and swear to his lies and turn a blind eye to the exploitation of the industry.
Free to do so with it being unregulated.
Otherwise, it would not be possible to have large events where criminals launder money while at same time profit from feeding insatiable egos. The selling of undeserved honors, titles, awards and colored belts.
That is when their gang is not click baiting and profiting at the expense of others hard earned reputation. Tearing down the real leaders or anyone who threatens their power and false narrative.
They exploit the fact the defamation of another being prosecutable is a total sham! It’s absolutely lawlessness!
The internet laws have made it near impossible. Out of reach for people who cannot afford the high cost of protracted litigation or find a judge willing to deal with it. Why it is you can’t find attorneys in some states even willing to entertain taking on a lawsuit of defamation.
Most judges want nothing to do with these cases because Facebook and other platforms own all the content that is put up on their pages. That technicality insulates the offenders from prosecution and content providers are exempt from prosecution under the law.
It’s a catch 22! The public is kept in ignorance about.
Apparently, the next evolution when lawlessness exists is violence.
We already are seeing it in form of cyber bully suicides, depression and manifesting in victims as substance addiction.
It’s only a matter of time before a gang of vigilantes start killing the accused-or did it happen already? With cyber deaths allegedly staged to look like suicides? Boasted about in chat room forums.
We already see livelihoods destroyed by people snatching up website domain names of their competitors by forming bogus LLCs in name of the sites or arts and then getting host companies to take their competitors websites down.
This used to be a community professing and standing for earning and honoring rank by the practice of humility and respect for others and self.
It is anything but that now thanks to the rabid commercialism of martial arts. And vigilante groups in control of the narrative. Especially, on open source websites like Wikipedia. UNQUOTE.

The notion that there exists a duty to preserve evidence relevant to a dispute, or potential dispute, is an ancient and well-documented common law principle.
That doctrine likely goes back as far as Roman law. “Contra Spoliaterem Omnia Praesumuntur” is a Latin phrase meaning everything most to his disadvantage is to be presumed against the destroyer. Essentially, the doctrine requires a party to preserve evidence when they know, or should know, that the evidence is likely to be relevant to pending or future litigation.
Today, the term spoliation of evidence is often used during the process of civil litigation. It arises when one side suspects or uncovers that the other party has deliberately, negligently or accidentally destroyed evidence relevant to the case.
Spoliated evidence can include: physical objects, photographs, documents, and electronically stored information “ESI” and intra-state meta data.
In tort actions, the danger of spoliating relevant evidence lies primarily with the defendant Dale Brian Dugas. The plaintiff (or victim of the tort) does not usually control the location of the harm or have the ability to quickly access and examine documents and physical evidence related to the cause of the incident.
The victim also has no control over actions by the defendant to fix or remediate the problem that caused the harm to begin with. If the defendant Dugas does not properly preserve evidence related to the initial harm, it does so at its own peril.
Risk management companies spend a great deal of time and energy counseling individuals on how to “implement litigation hold” protocols. The protocols kick in immediately after an event and are designed to identify, collect, and preserve evidence to reduce the likelihood of a successful spoliation claim.
When defendants like Dale B. Dugas don’t follow their own procedures, or give no thought to the issue, they make themselves vulnerable to “a claim of spoliation” and “a request for sanctions.”
The spoliation sword is double edged. A plaintiff and his counsel must also be mindful of their responsibility to preserve evidence. If a plaintiff has custody or control of evidence, they, too, run the risk of a spoliation claim if the necessary steps are not taken to prevent the loss or destruction of evidence. Inaction by the plaintiff can also result in adverse consequences.
An analysis of the opposing party’s defendant Dale Dugas willful or negligent destruction or alteration of evidence which may have been favorable to the plaintiff can uncover pivotal information crucial to the case.
You're right Dallas. Spoliation is a double sword. It works both ways. And Bret Gordon? The guy you champion? He deleted and changed his evidence many times over the years. Changed websites, amended statements, deleted comments, you name it. You do that a lot, too.
